Following the creation phase of the content management process, the content will need to be edited before entering the publication phase.

The process of editing material for publication consists of an overall review of the content, in an effort to assure that the finished product meets certain quality assurance standards. Each individual or company has its own specific standards in place for assuring the quality and accuracy of the content that it publishes.

In the case of text documents the editor will generally look for spelling, grammar and structural errors in the submitted work. An editor will also check factual information for accuracy. Additionally, the text as whole is reviewed for clarity, continuity and its ability to sustain reader interest. A first draft of material written for publication is usually returned to the author for revisions. In cases where such revisions are needed, the editor makes detailed notes on the original document, or separately outlines specific requests for changes to the material.
